Universities in Seoul To Consider

Hello, it's me again Edward.

Thank you for taking the time to read the blog so far.

As an aspiring international student in Korea, I can't help but think of where to study. Of course, in the future, I should make up my mind and apply to one of these universities. Making it in is another story but choosing where is apply is definitely the beginning.

I graduated from the University of the Philippines. It is considered the top university in the Philippines and I am very proud to be graduate of this school. As I studied in this school, I also encountered so many international students. I had classmates before from Korea, Japan and even the USA. I feel like I know what it feels to be an international student but I guess it is still different if you are doing it yourself.

If you have been thinking which universities to go to in Seoul, you've come to the right place. By some estimates, almost a third of university courses in South Korea are now taught in English, and many universities offer new, dedicated international campuses.

I will tell you which universities are best to go to in Seoul for international students especially if you are considering living in DASOLMIGA Guest House!

1. Soongsil University

Soongsil University (SSU) is the first modern university in Korea, dating its history back to 1897. It was founded under the Christian missionary William M. Baird. The campus is located in 369 Sangdo-ro, Dongjak-gu, Seoul, South Korea.

Soongsil University is home to a large community of foreign students, partly due to its "Vision 2020" plan, which aims to substantially increase its foreign clientele. The university is surrounded by bars, karaoke and restaurants, the gathering place of the international community is located at the "C-Bomb" bar.

An alcoholic beverage, the Taximansi (contraction of "taxi" and "calamansi") created by a foreign student is now a symbol of Soongsil's student culture. Foreign students are welcomed by "SISO" (Soongsil International Student Organization) a student organization aimed at helping foreigners throughout their stay. Soongsil students who volunteer as members of SISO are selected through a vigorous vetting process.

2. Chung-Ang University

Chung-Ang University (CAU) is one of the leading private comprehensive research universities in South Korea.

Starting as a church-run kindergarten in 1918, CAU transformed into a school for female kindergarten teachers in 1922 and was granted university status in 1953. The university held its centennial in 2018. It has 33,600 undergraduates, 5,200 graduates, 700 professors and 500 more part-time teaching staff.

The university accepts applications from foreign students. Among the students every 9 is a foreigner. The academic staff includes more than 2800 teachers and professors. The university has international partners which allows its students to participate in exchange programs.

3. Seoul National University

Their website: http://en.snu.ac.kr

Founded in 1946, Seoul National University is considered to be the most prestigious university in the country. The university has three campuses: the main campus in Gwanak-gu and two additional campuses in Daehangno and Pyeongchang. The university comprises sixteen colleges, one graduate school and nine professional schools. The student body consists of nearly 17,000 undergraduate and 11,000 graduate students.

SNU has one Graduate School with 99 programs across five fields of study. Interdisciplinary programs are operated by more than two different departments. Most of the majors below offer both master's Master's and Doctoral programs.

So here are the three best universities that I personally am aiming for. I am not sure if I can make it though, but the goal is there as these universities are the closest to my mentor and manager's location. It's best to study close to him so he can help me with in case I need one.

Choosing the right university for your Master’s degree in Korea is not as easy as you think and might take longer than you expected. Even if you already have an idea or know for sure what you want to do in the future, there are many factors you should consider before deciding which degree you should pursue.

If I study in any of these universities, I will benefit from many advantages:

  • finding a part-time job easily

  • travelling without big inconveniences

  • easy access to banks, post offices, and the city centre

  • enjoying a lot of cultural activities

I haven't applied for any yet as most of the applications are not available yet mostly due to pandemic or due to the vacation.

But I were to choose, I am aiming for SOONGSIL University. This university has a welcoming vibe for international students. The fact that they named a local drink TAXIMANSI from calamansi (the Filipino lemon) means Filipinos must have flourished in the university so well.

But as soon I made progress with my application, I will definitely update you STEP BY STEP of what I have to go through.

Again, thanks for reading this blog! Let's hope for the best!
